Zumwalt’s Fort dedication highlights Founders’ Day festivities

History will be made once again in Fort Zumwalt Park when the rebuilt Zumwalt’s Fort is dedicated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, as part of Founders’ Day. The dedication commemorates the rebuilding of Jacob Zumwalt’s War of 1812 family fort, or fortified home, which is said to have harbored as many as 10 families against Native American raids during the war. The newly-rebuilt fort is a gift to the City of O’Fallon from the O’Fallon Community Foundation. A limited number of wooden nickels and postcards with photos of Zumwalt’s Fort will be given out while supplies last.

Celebrating the “good old days” of the 1800s, Founders’ Day will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Fort Zumwalt Park, 1000 Jessup Drive, O’Fallon, Missouri 63366. The event features demonstrations of heritage skills such as basket weaving, rope-making, bee keeping and blacksmithing, with free hands-on kids’ activities and games such as cow milking and cow roping (both simulated), and cornhusk doll-making. Don Collop’s “Cowboy’s Way of Life Chuck Wagon” and Professor Farquar and Polecat Annie’s “Great American Medicine Show” will provide entertainment and educational fun, and a trio of acoustic musicians will play old-time music. Historic Heald Home tours will be available for only $2. Hand-made merchandise and festival-style food and beverages will be available for purchase.
